3,3',6,6'-Tetrabromo-9,9'-bicarbazole (TBBCz, CAS 18628-03-0) is a brominated bicarbazole building block used to make covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and related porous materials. Its two carbazole units are linked through a nitrogen-nitrogen bond at the 9,9'-positions, and bromine atoms sit at the 3,3',6,6'-positions. The result resembles two 3,6-dibromocarbazole molecules fused into a butterfly-shaped core.
The four bromo groups make TBBCz a convenient starting point for boronic esterification and Suzuki coupling, allowing it to be built into cross-linked framework networks. Frameworks derived from bicarbazole cores have been studied for acetylene capture and separation, flame retardancy, energy storage and hydrogen chloride sensing. Reported examples include the MOF FJU-83a, with a C2H2 uptake of 122.9 cm3/g, and the microporous COF Car-CFT-5-500, with a specific surface area of 1,400 m2/g and a capacitance of 545 F/g at 5 mV/s.
