3,3'-Bicarbazole (CAS 1984-49-2, C24H16N2) is a heterocyclic building block made of two carbazole units linked at their 3,3'-positions. It is used to synthesise hole transport materials, host materials and TADF emitters for organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), as well as materials for perovskite solar cells and organic photovoltaics.
Linking the carbazole units at the 3,3'-positions extends the π-conjugation of the molecule. It also partly blocks these electron-active sites, which improves stability. Derivatives built on this core have been reported as bipolar phosphorescent hosts, as exciplex-forming hosts in single-emissive-layer white OLEDs, and as the hole transporting material BczPh (NP-BC) in p–i–n perovskite solar cells reaching a PCE of almost 20%.
Ossila supplies the material at >98% purity, confirmed by 1H NMR, as an off-white to grey powder or crystals.
