3,3'-Dihydroxy-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarbaldehyde (CAS 14969-32-5), also known as DHBD or BDP, is a biphenyl building block for covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Its structure consists of two salicylaldehyde units joined at the 4,4'-positions, giving the molecule both aldehyde and hydroxy groups that support cross-linked frameworks and later post-functionalization.
The ligand is typically condensed with amine derivatives to form Schiff base COFs. When ethylenediamine is used as the partner, the product is a salen-COF, in which salicylaldehyde-ethylenediamine linkages create tetradentate pockets able to bind metal centres. These metal-COF complexes are studied as porous materials and electrocatalysts.
In one reported example, a bimetallic two-dimensional COF built from this dialdehyde and a porphyrin was tested for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction, reaching a turnover frequency of up to 26.19 s−1 at an overpotential of 500 mV. Ossila supplies the compound as a light brown powder with >98% purity.
