3-(4-Methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)aniline (CAS 641571-11-1) is a fluorinated aminophenylimidazole building block supplied at >98% purity by 1H NMR. Its aniline, methyl and imidazole groups all offer convenient sites for further functionalisation, making it a versatile intermediate for semiconductor, dye and OLED chemistry.
A typical use is the preparation of homoleptic imidazole-type iridium (Ir) triplet emitters that serve as blue phosphorescent emitters in OLEDs. In these complexes, both the imidazole and the aryl ring bind to the iridium centre. The strongly electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group widens the HOMO-LUMO gap, shifting the photoluminescence towards the blue.
The compound can also be combined with other ligand building blocks, such as pyridylpyrazoles, to tune the emission colour of active-layer emitters. It appears as a white-grey crystal or powder with a literature melting point of 126-129 °C and is also known as Nilotinib impurity A.
