3,5-Diformylphenylboronic acid (DFPBA, CAS 480424-62-2) is a bifunctional building block used as a bridging linker in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and in phenylboronic acid functional materials. Its benzene ring carries two aldehyde groups and one boronic acid group, all positioned meta to one another, and it is supplied as a white powder or crystals at >98% purity.
Because it combines aldehyde and boronic acid functionality, DFPBA works well in oxime click reactions, which are valued for fast, high-yield synthesis, broad functional group tolerance, biocompatibility and reversibility. This makes it useful for self-healing materials, bioconjugation, drug delivery and cell diagnostics, and its dual reactivity also allows post-functionalization.
Reported work includes PDMS-DPBA-5000, a luminescent self-healing polymer built from boroxine and imine bonds, which reached 4200% elongation, changed fluorescence from green to cyan on stretching and healed within 20 min at room temperature. DFPBA has also been incorporated into dynamic covalent hydrogels that capture cells at pH 6.8 and release them at pH 7.8 with 70 mM glucose, via boronic ester formation with cell-surface carbohydrates.
- Linker for building cross-linked covalent organic framework (COF) networks.
- Oxime click chemistry for preparing phenylboronic acid functional materials and polymers.
- Synthesis of self-healing and stretch-responsive luminescent polymers.
- Dynamic covalent hydrogels for triggered cell capture and release.
- Bioconjugation and drug delivery research.
