3,6-Di-tert-butylcarbazole (DtBuCz, CAS 37500-95-1) is a 9H-carbazole building block carrying tert-butyl substituents at the 3 and 6 positions. It serves as an electron-donating intermediate for making semiconducting molecules used in high-efficiency OLEDs and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The bulky tert-butyl groups push neighbouring carbazole rings further apart, breaking up the π–π stacking that would otherwise produce dimers or excimers and giving looser packing in thin films. Placing these groups at the 3,6-positions also blocks the radical-cation dimerization and polymerization that normally makes carbazoles electrochemically active.
In OLED small molecules, the DtBuCz unit helps raise the glass-transition temperature and keeps molecules separated, lowering the likelihood of triplet-polaron annihilation and so improving device efficiency and stability. The compound is made by Friedel–Crafts alkylation of carbazole with tert-butyl chloride using aluminum trichloride (AlCl3).
