3,6-Dibromo-9-(2-ethylhexyl)-9H-carbazole (CAS 173063-52-0) is a carbazole building block used as a monomer for synthesising organic semiconducting materials for solar cells and OLEDs. The carbazole core carries bromine atoms at the 3- and 6-positions and a 2-ethylhexyl chain at the 9-position.
Its two bromo groups make the compound reactive in cross-coupling chemistry, including Suzuki coupling and Kumada polymerization. Reacting it with 2,7-dipinacol-(2-ethylhexyl)-9H-carbazole gives an alternating 2,7- and 3,6-linked carbazole copolymer with a wide band gap of 3.2 eV and a narrow emission band at 400 nm (full width half maximum of 56 nm).
The monomer is also a route to PF8Cz, a fluorene–carbazole copolymer made with 2,2'-(9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane). PF8Cz has an optical bandgap of 3.06 eV and is widely used as a hole-transport layer (HTL) material in OLEDs. The product is supplied at 98% purity.
