3,6-Diphenylcarbazole (DPhCz, CAS 56525-79-2) is a 9H-carbazole derivative that acts as an electron-donating intermediate in the synthesis of small-molecule organic semiconductors. Ossila supplies it at >98% purity (1H NMR) as a white to off-white powder or crystals.
Phenyl groups at the 3- and 6-positions extend the π-π conjugation beyond the fused carbazole rings. This makes DPhCz a stronger donor than both plain carbazole and 3,6-dimethylcarbazole, and materials built from it tend to emit at longer, red-shifted wavelengths compared with those based on unsubstituted carbazole.
The compound serves as a building block for host and active materials in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) OLEDs, light-emitting electrochemical cells and organic photovoltaics. One example is the sky-blue emitter 3Ph2CzCzBN, a benzonitrile core carrying four 3,6-diphenylcarbazole units, which gives electroluminescence at 482 nm with CIE coordinates of (0.17, 0.36). Devices using it reached an external quantum efficiency of 16.6% at 1000 cd m-2 and an LT90 of 38 h.
- Synthesis of host and emitter materials for thermally activated delayed fluorescence OLEDs.
- Building more complex active materials for efficient light-emitting electrochemical cells.
- Introducing an electron-donor unit into organic photovoltaic materials.
- Preparing carbazole-based semiconductors for OFET research.
- Tuning emission towards longer wavelengths through extended π-π conjugation.
