3,7-Dibromo-10H-phenothiazine (37DBrPTz, CAS 21667-32-3) is a 10H-phenothiazine carrying bromine atoms at the symmetric 3 and 7 positions. Supplied by Ossila as a pale green to beige powder with purity above 98%, it serves as a heterocyclic building block for organic electronic and energy materials.
The phenothiazine core adopts a non-planar butterfly shape that limits intramolecular aggregation and helps prevent excimer formation. Its electron-rich nitrogen and sulfur atoms give it a stronger donor character than amines such as triphenylamine, tetrahydroquinoline and carbazole, which is why phenothiazine derivatives appear widely in dye-sensitized solar cells and battery research. A zinc battery built on the derivative PTZAN reached 2000 cycles, 1.3 V, 145 mAh g−1 and 187.2 Wh kg−1.
The compound is also a precursor for self-assembled monolayers such as Br-2EPT, used as a hole-selective contact between the anode and perovskite layer. p-i-n perovskite cells with this interface reached a power conversion efficiency of up to 22.44% (certified 21.81%). Phenothiazine compounds are also known for their bioactivity.
- Synthesis of donor materials for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).
- Preparation of hole-selective self-assembled monolayers such as Br-2EPT for p-i-n perovskite solar cells.
