3,7-Dibromodibenzothiophene 5,5-dioxide (DBTDO, CAS 83834-12-2) is a brominated synthesis intermediate used to build conjugated oligomers and polymers for organic electronics and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (HER). It is supplied at >99% purity (HPLC) as a white to off-white powder or crystals.
Structurally, the molecule is a 4,4'-dibromo-1,1'-biphenyl bridged by a sulfonyl (SO2) group, giving it a topology similar to fluorene. The electron-withdrawing SO2 bridge makes the dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide core strongly electron-deficient, and its rigid framework makes it a common acceptor unit in donor–acceptor (D–A) materials.
The bromine atoms at the 3 and 7 positions allow straightforward coupling reactions. In photocatalyst design, the hydrophilic dibenzothiophene dioxide unit can improve how well the resulting materials disperse in water, which helps raise hydrogen evolution activity. The compound is made by brominating dibenzothiophene 5,5-dioxide with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) in concentrated sulfuric acid.
- Acceptor building block for D–A conjugated polymers and oligomers used as photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution from water.
- Intermediate for the synthesis of OLED materials.
- Precursor for organic photovoltaic materials, including thiophene-phenylene oligomers with a dibenzothiophene-5,5-dioxide core.
- Monomer for low band gap polymers and conjugated microporous polymers.
- Building block for semiconductor materials used in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
