3-BPIC is a symmetric self-assembled monolayer (SAM) compound used as a hole transport or hole extraction layer in non-fullerene acceptor polymer solar cells and p-i-n perovskite solar cells. Its structure has two phosphonic acid anchors, two propanyl spacers and a single indolo[2,3-a]carbazole (IDCz) terminal group. The anchors bind to an electrode surface such as ITO, the spacers keep the anchors apart from the terminal, and the terminal sits against the photoactive layer to carry holes efficiently.
Forming a monolayer between anode and active layer, 3-BPIC works as a hole-selective contact that helps extract holes while blocking electrons, which improves device performance and operational stability. The bipodal biphosphonic acid design gives a relatively larger dipole moment and better compatibility with the active layer. Non-fullerene devices with a PM6 : L8-BO : BTP-ec9 (1:1:0.3 w/w) active layer and a 3-BPIC interface reached a power conversion efficiency of 19.34%.
The material is offered as an alternative to PEDOT:PSS and can be deposited from solution at low concentration, around 1 mM, in solvents such as ethanol, methanol, IPA, DMF or THF. It is supplied as a white powder or crystals with purity above 98% (HPLC).
