3-Bromo-9H-carbazole (CAS 1592-95-6), also known as 3-bromocarbazole, is a carbazole intermediate used to build dopant and host materials for high-efficiency phosphorescent and TADF OLEDs. It is supplied as a white to off-white powder or crystals with a purity above 98% by 1H NMR.
Structurally, it is the 3-position isomer of 2-Bromo-9H-carbazole, with a single bromine atom on the carbazole ring. Because the 3-position is blocked, derivatives made from it are less prone to oxidation into excimers or oligomers. It belongs to the carbazole family of electron donor units and semiconductor synthesis intermediates used in OLEDs, OFETs and organic photovoltaics.
Published examples include PBCz-PO, a bipolar host with a 3,3'-linked bicarbazole core and a triplet energy of 2.76 eV, used as a blue phosphorescent host with FIrpic, and TCzTrz, a tercarbazole-based dopant used with a DPEPO host that reached a maximum external quantum efficiency of 31.8%. The compound can be made by treating 9H-carbazole with N-bromosuccinimide in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature.
- Building block for the synthesis of host materials for phosphorescent OLEDs, including blue hosts.
- Intermediate for preparing dopant and emitter materials for TADF OLEDs.
- Synthesis of carbazole-based electron donor units for organic semiconductors used in OFETs and organic photovoltaics.
- Preparation of carbazole-based hole-transport materials as reported in perovskite solar cell research.
