3-Fluoro-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (CAS 394-50-3), also sold as 3-fluorosalicylaldehyde, is a substituted benzaldehyde carrying a hydroxy group at the 2-position and a fluorine atom at the 3-position. Supplied by Ossila at a purity of 97% as a white to off-white powder, it serves as a versatile fluorinated salicylaldehyde building block for drug discovery, organometallic ligand design and semiconductor research.
Its most common role is in preparing salen-type ligands, the tetradentate, C2-symmetric structures formed from salicylaldehyde and ethylenediamine. Cobalt-salen complexes derived from this aldehyde have shown reversible oxygen chemisorption, relevant to gas storage, and anticancer activity with an IC50 of 50 µM.
With three chemically reactive sites on one small aromatic ring, the compound also gives access to fluorinated bicyclic heterocycles, such as isoflavanones (chromanones) made by gold(I)-catalysed annulation, and can be used as a starting material for semiconducting acenes. It is available in 5 g and 10 g packs.
