3-Hexylthiophene (CAS 1693-86-3) is a thiophene monomer and building block used mainly as the precursor for poly(3-hexylthiophene), better known as P3HT. Ossila supplies it at >99% purity as a colourless to pale yellow liquid, with NMR characterisation in CDCl3.
P3HT remains the most widely studied polymer in polymer solar cell research. Devices pairing P3HT with PCBM typically reach 4-5 % efficiency, and fullerene acceptors tuned to the P3HT energy levels (HOMO 5.0 eV, LUMO 3.0 eV) have lifted performance to 6.5%. Preparing the polymer from this monomer is comparatively straightforward, needing only a 3-4 step route.
Beyond solar cells, the monomer serves as an intermediate for OFETs, OLEDs, organic photovoltaics and low band gap polymer synthesis. Its main limitation in photovoltaics is that P3HT absorbs only a narrow portion of the solar spectrum.
- Synthesis of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) for polymer solar cells.
- Preparation of regioregular poly(3-alkylthiophenes) as a hexylthiophene building block.
- Intermediate for semiconducting polymers used in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
- Building block for materials in OLED and organic photovoltaic research.
- Chemical synthesis of low band gap polymers.
