3CzBN, also known as 2,4,6-Tri(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzonitrile (CAS 1799923-03-7), is a donor-acceptor host material for blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) OLEDs. Its benzonitrile core carries three electron-donating carbazole groups positioned meta to one another, a layout intended to spread electronic delocalization over the whole molecule. It is supplied as an off-white powder in unsublimed grade (>98%, HNMR).
The compound has a ΔE ST of 0.21 eV. In room-temperature toluene it does not show TADF emission, but freezing the solvent brings out both phosphorescence and thermally activated emission bands. Its TADF behaviour is also switchable by solvent: the 1CT–3LE gap falls from 0.20 eV in toluene to 0.09 eV in acetonitrile, where 3CzBN becomes TADF active.
As a high-triplet-energy host with good carrier injection and transport, 3CzBN has been used with a 4TCzBN dopant in blue TADF devices reaching a maximum external quantum efficiency of 14.8%, a maximum power efficiency of 29.5 lm W −1 and an onset voltage of 2.8 V.
- Host material in the emissive layer of blue TADF OLEDs.
- Host for 4TCzBN-doped blue TADF devices targeting low onset voltage.
- Research into solvent-dependent TADF activation in carbazole benzonitrile derivatives.
- Photophysical studies of singlet-triplet energy gaps and solvent-freezing effects.
