4-(1,2,2-Triphenylvinyl)benzaldehyde (TPVBA, also known as TPE-CHO) from Ossila is a tetraphenylethylene building block with CAS number 1289218-74-1 and a purity above 98%. Its tetraphenylethylene (TPE) core carries a single aldehyde group at the 4-position of one phenyl ring, making it a formyl linker for covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and covalent polymeric frameworks, where it can serve to end-cap the network.
Because the TPE unit shows aggregation-induced emission (AIE), this aldehyde is used to build luminescent materials. In one reported route, a one-pot reaction with carboxyl methyl starch sodium and amino phenylboronic acid gave TPE-CMS luminescent polymeric nanoprobes with good water dispersibility, biocompatibility and efficient uptake into cells.
A derived quinolinium salt, TPE-QN, gives strong red emission in water that is quenched by iodide, enabling iodide sensing with a detection limit of 22.6 nM and secondary detection of Hg2+ down to 71.8 nM. The aldehyde group offers excellent reactivity for straightforward reactions. The compound is supplied as a white to off-white to yellow powder or crystals in 1 g and 5 g packs.
