4,4'-(1,3-Phenylenedioxy)dianiline, also known as TPE-R or 1,3-Bis(4-aminophenoxy)benzene (CAS 2479-46-1), is a diamine monomer built around a phenyl ether core with an aniline group at each end. It is supplied at >98% purity as a pale yellow to reddish yellow powder or crystal.
Its main role is as a precursor for polyimides with high thermal resistance, which find use as fire retardants. Copolymerising TPE-R with monomers such as PEG yields fuel cell membranes reported with ionic conductivity of 210 mS/cm and thermal stability up to 140 °C. Polyimide composites combining TPE-R with titanate nanotubes have been applied to electromagnetic shielding at microwave frequencies.
Because it carries two amine groups, TPE-R can also act as a ligand, binding metal centres to form 0D, 1D and 2D metal organic complexes studied for detecting nitroaromatic compounds.
- Synthesis of thermally resistant polyimides used as fire retardants.
- Preparation of polyimide-PEG copolymer membranes for fuel cells.
- Fabrication of polyimide/titanate nanotube composites for microwave electromagnetic shielding.
- Construction of metal organic complexes for sensing nitroaromatic compounds.
- Research on high performance polymers.
