4',4''',4'''''-(1,3,5-Triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tris([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carbaldehyde), also known as TFBPTz (CAS 1221509-80-3), is a triangular aldehyde linker used to build covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and covalent polymeric frameworks. Its structure places three 4-formylbiphenyl arms around a central triazine core, and it is supplied as an off-white powder or crystals with purity above 97%.
The three aldehyde groups react readily in polycondensation to give imine-linked COFs, and the molecule also serves in Knoevenagel-type condensations that produce vinylene-linked frameworks. Reported examples include a bipyridine-based Bpy-COF with a BET surface area of 1864 m2 g−1 and 4.0 nm mesopores, which after copper loading catalysed cycloaddition reactions in water at 25 °C within 40 min.
Other frameworks derived from TFBPTz include an ionic vinylene-linked COF reaching ionic conductivity of 2.72×10−3 S cm−1 in a polyethylene oxide composite, a zwitterionic COF delivering a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 2052 μmol h–1 under visible light, and an sp2-carbon-linked polymer that changes colour and fluorescence in acid.
- Synthesis of imine-linked and vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks.
- Preparation of COF-supported heterogeneous catalysts, such as copper-loaded frameworks for cycloaddition reactions.
- Development of photocatalytic COFs for hydrogen evolution reactions under visible light.
- Construction of acid-responsive fluorescent porous polymers for sensing.
- Fabrication of ionic COF composites for solid electrolytes in energy storage devices.
