4,4',4'',4'''-([1,1'-Biphenyl]-4,4'-diylbis(azanetriyl))tetrabenzaldehyde, also known as BDTB or N,N,N',N'-Tetra(4-formylphenyl)benzidine (CAS 865448-72-2), is a tetraphenylbenzidine building block bearing four aldehyde groups. Its tetratopic shape makes it a common monomer for constructing imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and cross-linked COF/MOF networks.
When combined with porphyrin, this ligand yields COFs that act as heterogeneous photocatalysts for reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization driven by photoinduced electron transfer. Frameworks built from it have also been used for hydrogen evolution from water, reaching rates up to 10 mmol/g·h, and for two-photon absorption with a cross-section value of 8756 GM/chromophore.
The aldehyde groups offer excellent reactivity for framework synthesis. Ossila supplies the material as a yellow powder with purity > 98%, with a molecular weight of 600.66 g/mole.
