4,4',4'',4'''-(Ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetrabenzaldehyde (CAS 2170451-48-4), also known as ETTBA or TP-Ald, is a yellow powder supplied at >98% purity. Its structure combines a tetraphenylethylene centre with four aldehyde groups at the ends of the phenyl arms, making it a common building block for covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials.
In COF synthesis, the aldehyde groups undergo imine condensation with amines to create imine-linked networks. Pairing this linker with 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)pyrene gives the COF ETTA-PyTTA, which reaches a surface area of 1519 m²/g and takes up 4.6 g/g of iodine. Such frameworks can also act as Schiff bases that bind metals such as copper; the resulting COF-Cu has been studied as a sonosensitizer for anti-tumour therapy.
The extended conjugation of the molecule also makes it a useful precursor for AIE chromophores. One example is the benzimidazole derivative TBI-TPE, whose emission at 525 nm is enhanced 13 times through the AIE effect. Reported research areas include batteries, electrochemiluminescence and sensors.
