BPADA, or 4,4'-(4,4'-isopropylidenediphenoxy)bis-(phthalic anhydride) (CAS 38103-06-9), is a dianhydride monomer built around a bisphenol A core. Supplied by Ossila at >99% purity as a pale yellow to yellow powder or crystal, it serves as an intermediate for making polyimides.
The bisphenol A core gives the resulting polyimides high thermal stability and strong mechanical performance. Because films made from BPADA are not fully conjugated, they show high optical transparency. These films can be stretched equibiaxially and have a high glass transition temperature (T g = 207 °C), which suits them to flexible display substrates.
Beyond heat resistance, BPADA-based polyimides are chemically inert, making them candidates for ion transporting membranes in fuel cells. The monomer has also been used to produce aerogels with super hydrophobicity (lotus effect).
- Synthesis of polyimides with high thermal stability and strong mechanical properties.
- Preparation of colourless, transparent, equibiaxially stretchable polyimide films for flexible display substrates.
- Fabrication of chemically inert ion transporting membranes for fuel cells.
- Production of super hydrophobic polyimide aerogels showing the lotus effect.
