4',4''',4'''''-nitrilotris(([1,1'-biphenyl]-3,5-dicarboxylic acid)), also known as H6NBPD (CAS 1347748-59-7), is a trigonal bridging ligand for building metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Its triphenylamine centre carries benzene-3,5-dicarboxylic acid anchoring groups at the 4-position of each phenyl ring. It is supplied as a beige powder or crystal with a purity of >97%.
When combined with copper nodes, this linker forms MFM-115a, a framework that delivers a CH4 capacity of 208 v/v between 5 and 80 bar at room temperature. That places it among the strongest MOFs reported for methane storage.
The ligand also forms hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks. On heating, HOF-NBPD(DMA) converts in the solid state to HOF-NBPD, whose neutral skeleton gives a nonpolar pore surface. In breakthrough tests, HOF-NBPD produced polymer-grade C2H4 from a C2H6/C2H4 (1/99, v/v) mixture at 29.2 L kg−1 at 298 K, roughly five times the 5.4 L kg−1 of HOF-NBPD(DMA).
- Synthesis of copper-based MOFs such as MFM-115a for methane storage.
- Construction of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks for ethane/ethylene separation.
