4',4''',4'''''-Nitrilotris([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carbaldehyde), known as NTBCA (CAS 872689-79-7), is a three-armed aldehyde building block for covalent organic framework (COF) synthesis. Its electron-rich triarylamine centre carries three biphenyl arms, each ending in a formyl group that reacts with amines to create imine bonds within the framework.
Researchers have paired NTBCA with hexaamino-hexaazatriphenylene nodes to make HAT-NTBCA-COF, a thermally stable material that took up 6.0 wt% CO2 at 273 K and 3.7 wt% at 298 K. In a [3 + 4] condensation with 4,4′,4″,4′″-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetraaniline, it forms COF-1, a thermally and chemically robust framework that acted as a visible-light photocatalyst for cross-dehydrogenative coupling and, together with a MacMillan imidazolidinone, for asymmetric α-alkylation of aldehydes.
Ossila supplies this ligand at >98% purity as a yellow to orange powder or crystals, in 500 mg, 1 g and 5 g packs.
