TPE-Bpin, or 4,4,5,5-Tetramethyl-2-[4-(triphenylvinyl)phenyl]-1,3,2-dioxaborolane (CAS 1260865-91-5), is a tetraphenylethylene derivative carrying a pinacolborane (Bpin) group. Supplied as a white to off-white powder with a purity above 98%, it serves as a building block for fluorescent macromolecules used in OLED and optics research.
The Bpin group is highly reactive, so the tetraphenylethylene unit can be joined to a molecular scaffold through coupling reactions such as Suzuki-Miyaura coupling. Tetraphenylethylene has a propeller-like shape and ranks among the most widely studied molecules for aggregation induced emission (AIE); for example, a benzothiadiazole end-capped with two tetraphenylethylene units displays AIE behaviour.
The compound is also commonly used to prepare electroluminescent dyes for OLEDs. A tetraphenylethylene-thienothiophene made from it reached a maximum luminescence of 400 cd/m2 and a luminous efficiency of 1.3 cd/A.
