4,4'-(Anthracene-9,10-diylbis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))dibenzoic acid, commonly called H2ABEDB (CAS 1562777-29-0), is a linear linker molecule used to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Its anthracene core carries two ethynyl bridges at the 9,10-positions, each ending in a 4-benzoic acid group, giving a rigid, extended π-conjugated ligand. It is supplied as an orange powder/crystal with purity above 98%.
Frameworks built from this ligand have been studied for conductivity and photocatalysis. In the microporous NNU-27 framework, the ligands stack in a zig-zag arrangement that opens a long-range π-conjugated charge transport route, with a reported conductivity of 1.3 (±0.5) × 10-3 S/cm. The zirconium MOF NNU-28 converts CO2 to formate under visible light at 183.3 μmol h−1 mmol MOF−1, with the anthracene unit acting as a light-harvesting antenna and taking part in the reaction through radical formation.
For hydrogen evolution, a Zr–ABEDB MOF loaded with 1.0 wt% Pt cocatalyst reached 704 μmol·h−1·g−1, about 220 times the 3.2 μmol·h−1·g−1 of the unmodified framework.
