4,4'-Biphenyldiacetonitrile (BPDAN, CAS 7255-83-6) is a bridging ligand for covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Its structure is a straight biphenyl core carrying an acetonitrile group at each end, and it is supplied as a white to off-white powder or crystals with purity above 98%.
The nitrile groups react readily with aldehydes in Knoevenagel condensation, making this compound a common building block for microporous organic networks and cross-linked COFs. Reported examples include a visible-light-harvesting microporous COF made with tri(4-formylphenyl)amine, which absorbs between 400 – 530 nm and emits strongly at 542 nm; combined with TiO2–Pt, it served as a stable photocatalyst for hydrogen generation from water under visible light.
The linker has also been polymerised with a chiral dibinaphthyl-22-crown-6 tetrabenzaldehyde to give the olefin-linked 2D tetragonal chiral framework CCOF-18. Reducing its olefin bonds yielded CCOF-18-R, a C–C single-bond framework that kept high crystallinity, porosity and chemical stability in strong acids and bases.
