4,4'-Bis(3-aminophenoxy)biphenyl (43BAPOBP), CAS 105112-76-3, is a diamine building block in which a central biphenyl unit carries a 3-aminophenoxy group at each end. Supplied at >99% purity as a white to reddish yellow powder or crystal, it serves as a monomer for polyimides and as an amine partner in imine synthesis.
Polyimides made from 43BAPOBP combine strong chemical and thermal resistance with high miscibility arising from intermolecular charge transfer, which makes them well suited to polymer matrices. Shape memory films based on these polyimides return from a temporary spiral form to their original flat shape on a hot plate at 240 °C, pointing to uses in thermal actuators.
Through condensation with aldehydes, 43BAPOBP gives imines. Fluorescent thin films built from such imines can sense hydrogen chloride and ammonia with a sensitivity of 150 ppb – 1.5 ppm, and remove hydrogen chloride (187.5 w/w%) and ammonia (37.5 w/w%).
- Monomer for synthesising chemically and thermally resistant polyimides.
- Preparation of polyimide matrices and composites for high performance polymers.
- Fabrication of shape memory polyimide films for thermal actuators.
- Synthesis of imines by reaction with aldehydes.
- Development of fluorescent thin films for detecting and removing HCl and NH3.
