4,4'-Bis(4-aminophenoxy)biphenyl (BAPB), CAS 13080-85-8, is a diamine monomer used as an intermediate in polyimide synthesis. Its structure consists of a biphenyl unit carrying an aminophenoxy group at each para position, giving a stiff central core joined to flexible phenyl ether linkages. Ossila supplies it at >99% purity as a white to pale reddish grey powder or crystal.
This combination of rigidity and flexibility carries through to the polymers made from it. Polyimide aerogels prepared from BAPB, with a density of 0.089 g/cm3, can be bent completely and show high compression (E = 1.9 MPa). BAPB-based polyimides have also demonstrated excellent biocompatibility with human dermal fibroblasts and osteosarcoma cells, making them candidates for biomedical device coatings and filaments for 3D printed implants.
Because each molecule carries two amine groups, BAPB can also be crosslinked with aldehydes to build covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that detect nitro-substituted aromatic compounds through photo-induced charge transfer.
- Monomer for synthesising flexible, low-density polyimide aerogels.
- Preparation of biocompatible polyimides for coating biomedical devices.
- Production of polyimide filaments for 3D printed implants.
- Building block for COFs that sense nitro-substituted aromatic compounds.
- Intermediate for polyimides studied in fuel cell applications.
