4,4′-Bis(trifluoromethyl)-2,2′-bipyridine (CAS 142946-79-0), also called 4,4'-(CF3)2bpy, is a fluorinated heterocyclic building block supplied as a white powder with >97% purity. It is a 2,2'-bipyridine carrying two trifluoromethyl anchoring groups and serves as a ligand for metal complexes in OLED, dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) and photocatalytic reaction research.
As with other 2,2'-bipyridines, its two nitrogen atoms bind a metal centre to form a stable five-membered chelate ring. Homoleptic terbium and dysprosium complexes of this ligand have shown quantum yields of up to 0.9% and a high 19F NMR relaxation rate of 99.5 Hz (B = 5.87 T at 298 K), pointing to potential in 19F MRI and optical imaging probes.
In DSSCs, the trifluoromethyl groups have been linked to photoconversion efficiencies of up to 34%, an improvement attributed to stabilization of the HOMO by the fluorinated substituents.
- Ligand for synthesizing organometallic and metal complexes.
- Building block for dyes in dye-sensitized solar cell research.
- Ligand design for OLED materials research.
- Ligand for metal complexes used in photocatalytic reactions.
- Scaffold for lanthanoid-based luminescence and 19F NMR/MRI probes.
