4,4'-Diethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl (DEBP, CAS 38215-38-2) from Ossila is a rigid, linear biphenyl building block carrying an ethynyl group at each end. The terminal alkynes extend the conjugation of the biphenyl core and make the molecule a convenient linker for cross-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and porous organic polymers. It is supplied at >97% purity and reacts readily in click chemistry and Sonogashira coupling.
Reported work shows how versatile the linker is. Combined with tris(4-bromo-2,3,5,6-tetramethylphenyl)boron nodes, it forms DEBP-BMOP, a Lewis acidic microporous polymer with 1.08 nm pores that gives a selective turn-on blue emission for fluoride ions in aqueous mixtures, with a detection limit of 2.6 μM. Coupled by Sonogashira reaction with Co or Mn tetrakis(p-bromophenyl)porphyrin complexes, it yields porous metalloporphyrin polymers that catalyse the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides, giving cyclocarbonates in 90% yield.
The compound appears as a white to light yellow to orange powder or crystals with a melting point of 168 °C.
