4,4'-(Ethyne-1,2-diyl)dibenzoic acid (CAS 16819-43-5), also known as H2EDDB or H2EDBA, is a rigid biphenylethyne dicarboxylic acid used as a linker in metal-organic framework (MOF) synthesis. Each benzene ring carries a carboxylic acid group at its end, giving a linear, stiff building block. It is supplied as an off-white powder or crystal with a purity above 98%.
With zirconium(IV), this ligand forms BUT-30, [Zr6O4(OH)4(L)6], an fcu-type framework that extends the UiO-66 structure. BUT-30 remains stable up to 400 °C, reaches a BET surface area of up to 3,940.6 m2 g−1 with a total pore volume of 1.55 cm3 g−1, and shows large negative thermal expansion along with oxygen sensing behaviour.
Combined with scandium, the linker bridges one-dimensional Sc(μ2-OH) chains in the framework GUF-1, which adsorbs H2 at 7.6 kJ/mol and delivers a working capacity of 41 g/L in a temperature–pressure swing system.
