4,4'-(Hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride, commonly known as 6FDA (CAS 1107-00-2), is a fluorinated dianhydride monomer used mainly to make polyimides for gas separation membranes, solar cell materials and low-loss telecommunication components. Its structure consists of two phthalic anhydride units linked through a perfluorinated isopropyl bridge.
The trifluoromethyl groups pull electron density away from the molecule, limiting electron delocalization. This lowers the dielectric constant of the resulting polyimides, reported at 2.33, making them well suited to low-signal-loss telecommunication materials.
6FDA-based polyimides are also widely chosen as matrices for mixed-matrix membranes, where they disperse fillers well and can carry filler loadings of up to 50 wt%. Such membranes have been applied to highly selective CO2/CH4 separation and to solar cell encapsulation, where the power conversion efficiency of Si-based cells rose from 14.67% to 15.64%. The material is supplied as a white to pale yellow powder or crystal with a purity of >98%.
