4,4'-Oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA, CAS 1823-59-2) is a dianhydride monomer built around a phenyl ether linkage, with a carboxylic anhydride group at each end. Supplied by Ossila as a white to off-white powder with purity above 99%, it serves mainly as an intermediate for making polyimides in materials science research.
Polyimide films prepared from ODPA combine high thermal resistance with a high specific capacitance of 121 F/g, making them suitable as separators in supercapacitors. Polyimides based on this dianhydride are also studied as anode materials for Li-batteries, where their behaviour in the electrolyte helps maintain electrochemical performance.
Beyond polymers, ODPA can be hydrolysed and coordinated to metal ions such as indium to build metal organic frameworks (MOFs). These MOFs have been used in flexible multilevel optoelectronic memory devices offering more than 192 distinct levels (6-bit storage) and stable retention of 10000 s. The compound is also listed among materials relevant to fluorescence emitters.
