4,4''-p-Terphenyldicarboxaldehyde (TPDA, CAS 62940-38-9) is an aldehyde-functional linker used to build covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Its rigid, linear terphenyl backbone carries an aldehyde group at each end, so it can join with amine building blocks to form cross-linked framework networks. It is supplied at >98% purity.
The aldehyde groups react readily, which makes TPDA a convenient choice for Schiff base condensation. Reacting it with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin (Tph), for example, yields Tph-TPDA-COF, a framework with strong photocatalytic activity. In the 2D framework TCPP-TPDA-COF, porphyrin active sites work together with the π-electron network of the terphenyl units, which serves as a charge transport pathway. This enabled oxygen-tolerant PET-RAFT polymerization in water under visible light of several wavelengths.
Published work using TPDA-based COFs covers electrochemiluminescence, photocatalysis, oxygen reduction reactions, iodine adsorption and the detection and removal of water pollutants.
