4,7-Dibromo-5,6-difluoro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (CAS 1295502-53-2), also known as DFBT, is a fluorinated benzothiadiazole building block used to make organic semiconductors for light-emitting diodes and photovoltaic devices. It is supplied by Ossila at >98% purity as a white to off-white crystalline solid.
The two fluorine atoms on the benzothiadiazole ring increase its electron-withdrawing character. When this acceptor unit is built into low-band gap polymer semiconductors, it improves electron affinity and pushes the band gap of the resulting material lower.
Both reactive positions carry bromide end groups, which make the monomer straightforward to use in coupling reactions. It serves as an intermediate towards 4,7-bis(5-bromo-4-(2-octyldodecyl)thiophen-2-yl)-5,6-difluorobenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole, the monomer for the high-efficiency polymer semiconductor PffBT4T-2OD (PCE11).
- Synthesis of low-band gap polymer semiconductors for organic photovoltaics and polymer solar cells.
- Preparation of organic semiconductor materials for light-emitting diodes.
- Building block for semiconductors used in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
- Intermediate in the route to the monomer for the polymer PffBT4T-2OD (PCE11).
- Bromide-capped acceptor unit for coupling reactions in conjugated polymer research.
