4-Fluoro-3-nitrobenzoic acid (CAS 453-71-4) is a fluorinated benzoic acid building block used in organic synthesis, drug discovery and fluorescent dye research. It carries a nitro group at the 3-position and a fluoro group at the 4-position, supplied as a white to off-white powder with a purity above 98%.
Each functional group offers its own reactivity. The carboxylic acid can be converted into esters with alcohols, the fluoride is suited to nucleophilic aromatic substitution, and the nitro group can be reduced to an amine that then acts as a nucleophile. Because the fluoro and nitro groups sit ortho to each other, the compound is a convenient precursor for benzimidazole derivatives, a class of active pharmaceutical ingredients found in antimicrobials, opioids, antipsychotics and antihistamines.
Reaction with isoselenocyanate gives benzoselenazoles, the selenium analogues of benzimidazoles. Polymers can also be attached to the molecule to build block copolymers for polymersome construction.
- Precursor for benzimidazole derivatives used as active pharmaceutical ingredients.
- Synthesis of benzoselenazoles through reaction with isoselenocyanate.
- Preparation of block copolymers for assembling polymersomes.
- Building block for fluorescent dyes and drug discovery research.
- General organic synthesis exploiting esterification, nucleophilic aromatic substitution and nitro reduction.
