4-Fluororesorcinol (4-fluoro-1,3-dihydroxybenzene, CAS 103068-41-3) is a fluorinated building block based on resorcinol, a meta-substituted benzenediol. Supplied by Ossila as a beige powder with a purity above 98%, it serves as an intermediate in the preparation of dyes, liquid crystals and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
Its best-known use is in making fluorinated fluoresceins. These dyes can be prepared by condensing 4-fluororesorcinol with benzaldehyde derivatives and then oxidising the product with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ), or by reacting it with phthalic anhydride in the presence of zinc chloride or methanesulfonic acid as catalyst.
The compound is also a starting material for bent-core azobenzene liquid crystal mesogens with a bending angle of 121.5°. Its multiple functional groups make it convenient for synthesis. In biochemical research, 4-fluororesorcinol is known to chelate the copper centre of oxy-tyrosinase, leading to inactivation of the enzyme.
- Synthesis of fluorinated fluorescein dyes via benzaldehyde condensation and DDQ oxidation.
- Preparation of fluoresceins by zinc chloride or methanesulfonic acid catalysed reaction with phthalic anhydride.
- Building block for bent-core azobenzene liquid crystal mesogens.
- Intermediate in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
- Research on tyrosinase inactivation through chelation of the copper centre in oxy-tyrosinase.
