4-Pentylphenyl 4-methoxybenzoate, also sold under the names PPMB and Nematal 105 (CAS 38444-13-2), is a phenyl ester liquid crystal built around a phenylbenzoate core. It forms a nematic phase just above room temperature, which makes it useful for optical electronics work such as liquid-crystal display (LCD) research.
A key use is as a host for luminophores. When the perylene diimide dye PDI is dissolved in it at roughly 10 -5 M, the dye molecules line up within the nematic matrix. This homeotropic alignment reduces surface losses, even though absorption rises when the material is lit through its narrow edges. The compound also works as an achiral host for chiral dopants, which impose a helical order and produce a chiral nematic phase.
Ossila supplies the material as white powder or crystals with a purity above 98% by 1H NMR. It melts at 29.0 °C and dissolves in methanol.
