4-Pentylphenyl 4-methylbenzoate (CAS 50649-59-7) from Ossila is a nematic liquid crystal built on a phenyl benzoate core. It belongs to the phenyl ester liquid crystal family and is intended for optical electronics work such as liquid-crystal displays (LCDs). Structurally it is closely related to 4-pentylphenyl 4-methoxybenzoate, which carries one additional oxygen atom.
Beyond display research, the compound serves as a host matrix for iodine-substituted difluoroboron(III) β-diketonate (BF2bdk) emitters. On their own, BF2bdk powders with 38 wt% iodine substituents give little afterglow at 77 K, yet once doped into phenyl benzoate matrices they show bright room-temperature phosphorescence with lifetimes reaching 1.0 s in ambient conditions. It has also been used as a surrogate in potency analysis of medical marijuana products.
The material is supplied as white powder or crystals with purity above 98% (1HNMR), a melting point of 34.0 - 38.0 °C and solubility in methanol. It is available in 10 g, 25 g and 50 g packs.
