4-Pentylphenyl 4-pentylbenzoate, also known as 5PEP5 (CAS 74305-48-9), is a nematic liquid crystal used in optical electronics work such as liquid-crystal display (LCD) research. Structurally it is the 4-pentylphenyl ester of 4-pentylbenzoic acid: a rod-like mesogen built on a phenylbenzoate core and carrying two pentyl alkyl chains.
Thanks to its ester linkage, the core of this molecule is more flexible and less strictly oriented along the long molecular axis than biphenyl liquid crystals such as 4'-heptyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carbonitrile. Even so, its alignment behaviour resembles that of the rod-like biphenyl compound 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl. On rubbed polyvinyl imidazole (PVI) substrates, it aligns perpendicular to the rubbing direction and to the vinyl backbone.
The material is supplied as a white powder or crystals with a purity of >97% by 1H NMR, melts between 34.0 and 38.0 °C and is soluble in methanol. It belongs to the phenyl ester and nematic liquid crystal families.
