4'-(Pyridin-4-yl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid, also known as HPBPC (CAS 1393711-96-0), is a biphenylpyridine linker used to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Its backbone is rigid and linear, with a pyridine ring at one end and a carboxylic acid group on the terminal benzene ring at the other, giving two distinct coordination sites. It is supplied as a white powder or crystal with a purity above 98%.
This ligand forms the flexible MOF NiL2, which has a diamondoid topology that switches between a closed, non-porous phase and several open, porous phases when exposed to specific CO2 and CH4 pressures. Doping the framework with cobalt ions gives control over this gate-opening behaviour, and tuning the Ni/Co ratio adjusts the methane-induced phase changes to raise working capacity.
The composition Ni0.89Co0.11L2 (X-dia-1-Ni0.89Co0.11) delivered the best methane working capacity between 5 and 35 bar at 298 K, reaching 153 cm3 cm−3, which exceeds that of benchmark rigid MOFs.
- Synthesis of metal-organic frameworks that use a rigid linear pyridine-carboxylate linker.
- Research on flexible diamondoid MOFs for methane storage.
- Studies of gate-opening and phase switching between porous and non-porous states under CO2 and CH4 pressure.
- Investigation of metal doping, such as Ni/Co mixed frameworks, to tune methane working capacity.
