4-(trans-4-Pentylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile, commonly known as PCH5 (CAS 61204-01-1), is a rod-shaped nematic liquid crystal used in optoelectronic and liquid-crystal display (LCD) research. It is supplied as a white powder or crystals with a purity above 98%, determined by 1HNMR.
In its molecular structure, a pentyl alkyl chain and a benzonitrile group sit at the 1,4-positions of a cyclohexane ring in trans geometry, so the two substituents point in opposite directions. This gives the compound its diastereomer core.
PCH5 passes from the crystalline to the nematic phase at 303 K and from the nematic to the isotropic phase at 327.6 K. In the nematic phase the molecules lack positional order but tend to align along a common direction, known as the director. Positional order can be developed through physical gelation, driven mainly by intermolecular hydrogen bonding of gelling agents in solvents.
