5-(4,4,5,5-Tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)isophthalaldehyde (CAS 945865-80-5) is a bifunctional building block for covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and macromolecules. Its benzene core carries two aldehyde groups and a pinacol boronate ester (Bpin), supplied as a white to off-white powder with >98% purity.
The two aldehyde groups condense with amines to give imine-linked COF networks, while the Bpin group opens the way to post-functionalization by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. Attaching pyrene, for example, yields a pyrene-isophthalaldehyde that forms a COF cage with cyclohexanediamine; this cage has been investigated for photocatalytic conversion of benzeneboronic acid to phenol at 99% conversion. Coupling with bipyridine instead gives cages that capture iodine, up to 5.8 g/g.
The compound is also a precursor to benzimidazole-triazine materials for exciplex OLEDs, made with triazine derivatives and N-phenyl-o-phenylenediamine. Devices reported from these materials reached a luminous efficacy of 80.4 lm/W, current efficiency of 60.1 cd/A and external quantum efficiency of 18.4%.
