TFBPB, also known as 1,3,5-Tris(4-formylbiphenyl)benzene or TFBB (CAS 805246-78-0), is a trialdehyde building block used to construct covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Its molecule is trigonal: a central benzene ring carries three 4-formyl-[1,1'-biphenyl] arms at the 1,3,5-positions, making it a three-way bridging linker. It is supplied as an off-white powder or crystals with a purity above 97%.
The three aldehyde groups take part readily in polycondensation, giving imine or carbon-carbon double bond linkages. Combined with 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine, it forms TFBPB-TAT-COF, a donor-acceptor framework whose band gap and catalytic sites suit it to light absorption and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution; this COF has also shown anticancer activity against HCT-116 human colorectal carcinoma cells.
Through Knoevenagel condensation with a vinyl tetrazine monomer, TFBPB yields TA-COF-2, a highly crystalline framework with a specific surface area of 1114 m2 g−1. TA-COF-2 acts as a photocatalyst for arylboronic acid oxidation and light-driven benzylamine coupling, and changes colour reversibly on exposure to HCl solution, HCl vapour and NH3 vapour.
- Linker for synthesising imine-linked and vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks.
- Building photocatalytic COFs for the hydrogen evolution reaction.
- Preparing COF photocatalysts for arylboronic acid oxidation and light-induced benzylamine coupling.
- Developing colorimetric COF sensors for HCl and ammonia vapour.
- Research on COF materials with anticancer activity against colorectal carcinoma cells.
