5,5',5''-(Benzene-1,3,5-triyl)tripicolinaldehyde, commonly called BTPA, is a trigonal aldehyde monomer used to build covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Its structure places three 5-pyridylaldehyde arms on a central benzene core at the meta-positions, giving an electron-deficient, nitrogen-rich building block with a molecular weight of 393.39 g/mol (CAS 1482413-54-6).
The aldehyde groups take part readily in polycondensation to form imine linkages, making BTPA suitable for cross-linked COF networks. Condensed with 2,5-bis(3-hydroxypropoxy)terephthalohydrazide, it yields the antiparallel stacked framework BHTH-BTPA-ACOF, whose pyridine and hydrazine-carbonyl sites bind Pd(II) strongly; this material reached an adsorption capacity of 412.9 ± 14.2 mg g -1 for Pd(II) in 3M nitric acid, with fast kinetics and excellent selectivity.
Combined with tetratopic pyrene tetraaniline linkers, BTPA also forms the sub-stoichiometric 2D PY-COF, which shows an absolute CO 2 uptake of 146 mg g -1. Ossila supplies BTPA at >98% purity as a beige powder or crystals, in 250 mg, 500 mg and 1 g packs.
