5,5′′-Dibromo-2,2′:5′,2′′-terthiophene (CAS 98057-08-0) is α-terthienyl carrying bromine atoms at its 5 and 5′′ positions. Supplied by Ossila as a light yellow powder or crystals with purity above 98% (1H NMR in CDCl3), it serves as a synthesis intermediate for semiconducting molecules, oligomers and conjugated polymers. The compound can be made by brominating terthiophene with N-Bromosuccinimide in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF).
The two terminal bromines make it a convenient coupling partner for building extended thiophene systems. In one example, a single synthetic step converts it into the pyrene end-capped oligomer 5,5′′-di(pyren-1-yl)-2,2′:5′,2′′-terthiophene, a promising semiconductor for organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) and organic solar cells (OSCs); devices made from it reached a field effect mobility of 0.11 cm2 V−1 s−1.
Naphthyl end-capped oligothiophenes derived from this core are also strong candidates for high-performance organic electronics. The methoxy-functionalized analogue MONaT3 shows markedly enhanced crystallization into aligned fibers. It is available in 1 g and 5 g packs.
