5,5'-Dibromo-2,2'-bithiophene (CAS 4805-22-5) is a 2,2'-bithiophene carrying bromine atoms at both 5-positions. It serves as a versatile starting material for making semiconducting small molecules, oligothiophenes and conjugated polymers used in OLEDs, OFETs and organic solar cells. The two bromine sites make it a key intermediate for C-C bond formation through Suzuki and Stille coupling.
Copolymerising it with a 9,9-dioctylfluorene diboronic ester gives F8T2, a wide band gap conjugated polymer used as a yellow emitter in OLEDs and as a donor blended with PCBMs in OPV devices. F8T2:ZnO nanoparticle photodetectors have reached an external quantum efficiency of 782% at 358 nm under 3 V forward bias.
Coupling with 7-dodecyl-9H-fluoren-2-boronic acid yields the p-channel semiconductor DDFTTF, which has shown mobility up to 0.39 cm2/Vs and an on/off ratio of 2 × 10^5 in OFETs, with water-stable performance suited to OTFT sensors detecting analytes at ppb levels. Ossila supplies this solid powder at >98% purity (1H NMR in CDCl3).
