5,5'-Dibromo-3,3'-bis(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)-2,2'-bithiophene (CAS 1974310-58-1, also known as g333-BTBr) is a brominated bithiophene building block used to make semiconducting oligomers and polymers for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic solar cells (OSCs). It is supplied at >98% purity (HPLC) as an off-white to yellowish powder or crystals.
The molecule carries glycol side chains at the 3,3'-positions, which raise hydrophilicity and help the target structures dissolve. Bromine groups at the 5,5'-positions act as coupling sites, allowing the conjugated system to be extended into oligomeric and polymeric semiconductors. Oxygen atoms in the side chains can also form intramolecular S–O interactions within the head-to-head coupled bithiophene, encouraging a coplanar backbone and a longer effective conjugation length that supports efficient charge transport in films.
A key use is the preparation of the polymer p(g2T-TT). Its glycolated thiophene backbone is associated with high currents, high transconductance and sharp subthreshold switching, while keeping fast switching speeds in accumulation-mode organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs).
- Synthesis of the glycolated conjugated polymer p(g2T-TT).
- Preparation of channel materials for accumulation-mode organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs).
- Building semiconducting oligomers and polymers for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
- Development of low band gap polymers for organic photovoltaics and organic solar cells.
