5,5'-Dibromo-3,3'-difluoro-2,2'-bithiophene (2T2F-2Br, CAS 1619967-08-6) is a bithiophene intermediate carrying two fluorine atoms and two bromine atoms. It is supplied by Ossila as a white powder with a purity of >98% (1H NMR) and serves as a building block for organic semiconductor synthesis.
The bromine substituents at the 5,5'-positions allow the molecule to be extended through Suzuki or Stille cross-coupling, forming new C-C bonds to build larger conjugated systems such as small molecules, oligomers and polymers for organic field effect transistors, polymer solar cells and OLEDs.
Because fluorine is electron poor, its presence on the thiophene rings lowers the HOMO energy level of the resulting polymer donors and can raise their charge mobility. Fluoro-sulfur (F⋅⋅⋅S) interactions along the backbone also favour a planar solid-state structure. Published work on fluorinated poly(3,4-dialkylterthiophenes) reported deeper HOMO levels, higher open-circuit voltage in organic solar cells and improved molecular ordering in films compared with nonfluorinated analogues.
