5,5'-Dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (5,5'-dmbpy, CAS 1762-34-1) from Ossila is a bipyridine derivative carrying methyl groups at the 5 and 5' positions. It serves as a common ligand and building block in organometallic synthesis, in photosensitizer preparation and in pharmaceutical research. The material is an off-white powder with a purity above 98% by 1H NMR and a melting point of 115 °C.
The methyl substituents can be oxidised to give 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid, which makes the compound a useful precursor for functionalised bipyridine ligands. As a ligand, it has been used in the iridium(III) complex [Ir(pbi)2(5,5'-dmbpy)]PF6, which shows strong luminescence with G-quadruplex DNA and has been applied in an aqueous assay for protein tyrosine kinase-7 (PTK7), a biomarker linked to several leukaemias and solid tumours.
The compound has also shown marked activity against embryos, halting development at several stages of embryogenesis. It is supplied in 10 g and 25 g packs.
- Ligand for the synthesis of organometallic and coordination complexes.
- Precursor for preparing 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid by oxidation of the methyl groups.
- Building block for photosensitizers and luminescent metal complexes.
- Construction of G-quadruplex-based luminescent assays, such as detection of PTK7 using an iridium(III) complex.
- Intermediate for pharmaceutical research and semiconductor material synthesis for OLED, OFET and organic photovoltaic studies.
